“Why are they scraping OVER cupping marks?” 👀
Because this is one of the most powerful — and least understood — combinations in modern soft tissue therapy.
Cupping and IASTM work through completely different mechanical forces… and when combined correctly, they create a unique “push-pull” effect on the fascia, muscles, and circulation system.
Cupping therapy uses negative pressure to gently lift and decompress restricted fascial layers. This creates space between tissues, improves local blood flow, reduces compression around irritated structures, and helps restore fluid movement in stiff, overloaded areas.
Once the tissue is decompressed, IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is applied over the area to introduce controlled shear forces across the fascia and muscle fibers. This helps break down adhesions, improve fascial glide, stimulate fibroblast activity, and restart healing in chronically tight or painful tissue.
That’s why therapists may perform scraping directly over existing cupping marks.
Those circular marks are usually therapeutic ecchymosis not traumatic bruising. They’re a superficial microvascular response caused by decompression and increased circulation within restricted tissue.
When these therapies are combined correctly, the goal is to:
✔ Improve mobility and flexibility
✔ Reduce fascial restrictions
✔ Improve blood flow and lymphatic drainage
✔ Decrease muscle stiffness and tension
✔ Stimulate collagen remodeling
✔ Improve recovery after training
✔ Reduce chronic pain and movement limitation
✔ Restore normal sliding and gliding between tissues
This approach is now widely used in sports rehab, physical therapy, mobility restoration, and performance recovery because it targets both compression AND restriction inside the soft tissue system.
Modern rehabilitation is evolving far beyond simple massage.. 🔥
