Sleeping like this might feel cozy… but your wrist is under pressure all night.
Inside your wrist is a narrow passage called the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome space. It carries your median nerve (the one that controls sensation in your thumb, index, and middle fingers) along with multiple flexor tendons. There isn’t much extra room in there so when your wrist stays bent for hours, the pressure rises fast.
In a neutral wrist position, pressure inside this tunnel is low (around ~2–5 mmHg).
But when you sleep with your wrist curled under your pillow or chin, it can spike 10x higher sometimes beyond 30 mmHg. That’s enough to compress the nerve and disturb its blood supply and signal transmission.
That’s why you may notice:
✔ Tingling or “pins and needles” in your thumb, index, and middle fingers
✔ Night-time numbness that wakes you up
✔ A burning or electric shock sensation
✔ Weak grip—dropping objects or struggling to hold things
💡 Important detail most people miss:
👉 Your pinky finger is NOT affected in carpal tunnel.
If your pinky is tingling too, it’s likely a different nerve (ulnar nerve), not the median nerve.
Why it feels worse at night:
Your wrist stays bent for long, uninterrupted periods
Fluid shifts can increase pressure inside the tunnel
Nerve sensitivity increases when compressed continuously
The good news? You can reduce the pressure with simple changes.
What actually helps:
✔ Keep your wrist neutral at night (use a wrist splint if needed)
✔ Relax your grip during the day—especially while using your phone
✔ Do tendon glide exercises to improve movement inside the tunnel
✔ Fix your wrist posture during work—not just while sleeping
Your body doesn’t suddenly fail it sends signals first.
Tingling is not random. Numbness is not normal.
Create space for the nerve… and it will function the way it’s meant to. 🔁
