Most people hear “disc bulge” and immediately think surgery.
But that’s not how most spine problems are managed.
The lumbar spine (lower back) contains several discs that act like shock absorbers between the vertebrae.
The most commonly affected levels are L4–L5 and L5–S1, because these segments handle a large portion of the body's load during sitting, bending, lifting, and twisting.
When a disc bulges or becomes irritated, it can create pressure on nearby nerves. This may lead to symptoms such as:
• Lower back pain
• Pain radiating down the leg (sciatica)
• Tingling or numbness
• Muscle tightness and stiffness
• Difficulty bending or standing for long periods
However, an important fact many people don’t know is this:
A disc bulge does not automatically mean permanent damage.
In many cases, symptoms improve when the pressure on the spinal structures is reduced and the surrounding muscles regain proper function.
One treatment approach used in physiotherapy is spinal decompression therapy.
This therapy gently creates controlled traction along the spine. The goal is to:
• Reduce pressure on compressed discs
• Improve space around spinal nerves
• Support circulation and nutrient exchange in the disc
• Help relax surrounding muscles
When combined with proper physiotherapy, mobility work, and strengthening exercises, many people experience significant improvement in their symptoms.
It’s also important to understand that back pain is rarely caused by just one factor.
Posture, muscle imbalance, prolonged sitting, poor lifting mechanics, and lack of movement can all contribute to spinal stress.
That’s why proper assessment and a structured rehabilitation plan are essential.
If you’ve been told you have an L4–L5 or L5–S1 disc issue, remember that understanding the condition is the first step toward managing it effectively.
Your spine is designed to move, adapt, and recover with the right care.
